The study of the population: the rates

The study of the evolution of the population is really important for the different countries. A correct analysis gives them a chance for planning future politics and services. So that, it's necessary to have a clear system for comparing the different territories and their evolution: rates. For knowing the natural evolution of the population, we usually work with the birth rate, death rate and natural growth of the population. These three rates can tell us if a region or area is increasing or decreasing in demographic terms:

The birth rate (B.R.) is the relation between the amount of births and the total population of a town, village, city, nation or world. The formula is:

The death rate (D.R.) is the relation between the amount of deaths and the total population of a town, village, city, nation or world. The formula is:

The natural growth rate of the population (N.G.R.) is the difference between the amount of birth and the deaths. We're going to express per thousand. We can calculate it with a simple subtraction: B.R. - D.R. or using the following formula:

Activity 1 : Calculate the B. R. and D.R. of the following table:
Activity 2: Answer the following questions:

- Which is the region that is having more natural growth?

- Which ones have got a negative growth?

- In your opinion, what is the cause of the difference?
