Text: Italy in the 19th century

Therefore Italy shall be one: we are a nation of over twenty million men and women, traditionally known by a single name, Italy. A country protected by the most precise natural border ever made by God, where the people speak the same language, possess the same beliefs, the same customs, the same traditions, the most united country of the world, proud of its potical, scientific and artistic past.

The most highly praised country in the history of Europe. But we lack a flag, we lack a political designation and we lack a place among European nations. We are divided into eight states... all independe from each other and unallied.

(Guiseppe Mazzini, Italy, Autria and the Pope, 1845)
